The club itself was formed on the 28th June 1896 by a small group of gents. Although firstly only seven holes were laid in 20 acres, the club grew and within two years additional land was acquired and a further two holes added. Unchanged for 70 years it wasn't until the 1960's that the course was extended to provide 18 holes. Todays course has been further extended in the area of Coney Island.
Now known as one of the best "links" courses in Ireland the club recently received a visit from Rory McIlroy. Rory was asked "....what are your favourite links courses in Northern Ireland, excluding Portrush and Royal County Down?"
".....Now then courses – I think the best links would be Ardglass."
